Mooladhana Malayalam PDF Free Download It was the only language in the world that, by originating from Sanskrit, has not been influenced by any other foreign languages. Malayalam is written in a script called Keralanam scriptam. This script is syllabic in nature with each letter representing a consonant sound. Based on its history, this ancient language has evolved into various different forms including poems or songs, which are known as kavitha in Malayalam. It is also one of the few languages that are traditionally taught through its own unique writing system - called Arabi-Malayalam Lipi - created by Muslim scholars during their rule over Kerala region around 1300 AD. Kerala has been a part of India since 1947 but was a part of the erstwhile state of Travancore before that. In this article, we will be talking about Malayalam literature.
The people of Kerala speak a Dravidian language called "Malayalam" which is spoken by nearly 30 million people in the state and is to be considered as one of the major languages in South India. It is also popularly known as the language of God because it has a very old history and a wide range from mythology to modern literary culture from earliest times. Kerala being a host to numerous famous historical places have been written about in historical manuscripts. The Malayalam language has a lot of resemblance with Tamil which is a Dravidian language and thus It was not considered as a separate language before third century AD. The early history of Malayalam literature starts from the period when the writings in Sanskrit were prevalent. Most of the ancient works in Malayalam belong to this period. Even though the early works in Malayalam literature were written much earlier, they were either lost or destroyed later on because of being written in crude palm leaf manuscripts. The ancient works included translations, adaptations and original compositions in prose and poetry which mainly dealt with themes from epics/ mythology and folklore. Nearer to the Christian era, the works were written in the language of the common man, which was mostly in prose and poetry, but later on it became more elaborate with use of language more suited to higher literary standards. It is generally believed that Namboothiri Thampuran introduced Arabic-Malayalam script for writing Malayalam works. With time, people began writing their own pieces regardless of being influenced by Sanskrit or not. The period around century AD is famous for Sanskrit literature. The works were mostly translations of Sanskrit works accepted as classics at that time. However, some writers who belonged to this period are known for their original themes too. With the dawn of Christianity, many prose works dealing with religious issues were written, followed by hagiographies and chronicles. With the arrival of Portuguese in India, there was a drastic change in the whole scenario. Portuguese missionaries made it to Malabar coast in 1500 AD. The writing style of that period was to translate European writings into Malayalam. The works were mainly themes like Christian doctrine and Christian moral lessons. With the arrival of British East India Company to India (in 1792), the situation began to change drastically. This time lots of attempts were made by writers to write on their own without being influenced by Sanskrit or European writings which were considered as classics till then.
